This is concerned with the neurological problems that affect the eye. The dysfunction of the optic nerve leads to irreparable damage.
This subspecialty of ophthalmology deals with the diseases of an afferent visual pathway like demyelination, ischemic, nutritional, toxic, infiltrative, hereditary, compressive optic neuropathy, chiasmopathy and retrochiasmal disorders of central visual pathways, Efferent pathways disorders of ocular motility like Nystagmus, Saccadic-Pursuit Disorders, Palsies of nerves of ocular motility of various etiologies, Ocular Myasthenia. So this subspecialty deals with the diagnosis of various types of diplopias and visual loss and managing them in conjunction with Radiologists, Neuro physician,s and Neuro-Surgeon.
